Job description
As the Senior Mechanical Engineer, Research and Development (R&D), on our Stryker’s Orthopedic Instruments new product development (NPD) team, you will be charged with applying sound engineering practices while designing new products and technologies used in surgery. Staying close to our customers and collecting valuable insights into product performance and features will be critical to success. You will have an active role in everything from brainstorming new concepts to commercialization and manufacturing scale-up.

You will need to live within commuting distance to our Portage, Michigan office. You will need to be in the office on average 4 days a week and can work from home on other days.
What you will do
Under minimal supervision, design, develop, modify, and verify mechanical components for medical devices.
Under minimal supervision, work with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success.
Translate design inputs to engineering specifications and produce sub-system level designs.
Apply fundamental and some advanced concepts, practices and procedures for problem solving. Develop and analyze solutions, prototyping one or more options to provide proof of concept.
Demonstrate proficiency with product’s intended use and clinical procedures. Demonstrate advanced understanding of customer needs and design inputs.
Follow fundamental industry standards, design requirements and test strategies which apply to regulatory requirements.
Independently create or refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file
Follow R&D procedure like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.
Work on complex problems, applying advanced experience and learnings; while demonstrating ownership and prioritization of work with minimal supervision.
What you need
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, BioMedical, or related discipline.
2+ years of work experience in mechanical design engineering.
Experience with 3D CAD modeling (Creo Preferred)
Working knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering practices and design principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical ability to create engineering drawings and models, applying GD&T and CAE tools.
Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to product design.
Experience working in a regulated industry
Ability to Communicate basic plans and technical information to team members
