Job description
As the Senior Mechanical Engineer, Research and Development (R&D), you will be responsible for performing implant and instrument design work, leading small projects, and actively participating on multi-functional teams to advance assigned projects through the design/development process through launch to the market for Stryker’s Interventional Spine (IVS) business unit within Stryker Instruments.

You will need to live within commuting distance to our Portage, Michigan office. You will need to be in the office 3-4 days a week and can work from home on other days.
What you will do
Under minimal supervision, design, develop, modify, and verify mechanical components for medical devices.
Under minimal supervision, work with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success.
Translate design inputs to engineering specifications and produce sub-system level designs.
Apply fundamental and some advanced concepts, practices and procedures for problem solving. Develop and analyze solutions, prototyping one or more options to provide proof of concept.
Demonstrate proficiency with product’s intended use and clinical procedures. Demonstrate advanced understanding of customer needs and design inputs.
Follow fundamental industry standards, design requirements and test strategies which apply to regulatory requirements.
Independently create or refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file
Follow R&D procedure like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.
Work on complex problems, applying advanced experience and learnings; while demonstrating ownership and prioritization of work with minimal supervision.
What you need
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, BioMedical, or related discipline.
2+ years of work experience in mechanical design engineering.
Working knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering practices and design principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of design and concept generation CAD or CAE modeling tools (Creo preferred)
Knowledge of analysis tools (i.e. DFMECA, Fault Tree Analysis, FEA, Stack-ups, etc.) and statistical methods (i.e. leveraging Minitab for ANOVA, normality testing, confidence calculations, etc.).
Technical ability to create engineering drawings and models, applying GD&T and CAE tools.
Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to product design.
