Job description

The Vocera Platform, an industry-leading clinical communication and workflow platform, is the intelligent ecosystem that connects clinical staff and information needed to deliver patient care. The Principal Product Owner, Hands-Free Communication, will report to the Senior Director of Engineering for Stryker’s Hands-Free Communication group. In this role, you will help our customers solve business challenges by rapidly releasing products/services to the market and building user friendly, elastic, scalable, cost-optimized solutions. Solution components include proprietary mobile communication devices worn by our users for hands-free communication, along with the associated firmware and supporting Voice and Messaging Services that can reside on-prem or in the Cloud. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineering, DevOps, quality assurance, portfolio management, and healthcare experts, to ensure the delivery of high-quality, world-class software solutions.

Who we want:

  • Collaborative partners. People who build and leverage cross-functional relationships to bring together ideas, information, use cases, and industry analyses to develop best practices.
  • Motivated product launchers. Engineers who bring strategic direction and drive for execution to ensure products are developed and launched with precision.
  • Self-directed imitators. People who take ownership of their work and need no prompting to drive productivity, change, and outcomes.

What you will do:

The Principal Product Owner operates strategically, overseeing and guiding other Product Owners for a large, complex platform with multiple products split into various components and teams. Here are the key functions of a Principal Product Owner:

  • Strategic Vision and Alignment:
The Principal Product Owner is responsible for executing the strategic direction for the product or product line. This involves aligning the product strategy with the company's overall business strategy and ensuring that all Product Owners work towards a common goal.
  • Guidance and Leadership:
They provide guidance and leadership to other Product Owners. This includes mentoring and coaching to ensure that Product Owners are effective in their roles, adhere to best practices, and align with the product vision.
  • High-Level Prioritization and Decision-Making:
While individual Product Owners manage the priorities of their respective areas, the Principal Product Owner is responsible for high-level prioritization and decision-making. They ensure that the most critical aspects of the product are being focused on and that resources are allocated effectively.
  • Stakeholder Management:
They will lead in managing key stakeholders, particularly at the executive level. The Principal Product Owner must communicate the product vision, progress, and challenges to stakeholders and integrate their feedback into the product strategy.
  • Market and Customer Insight:
Keeping a pulse on market trends, customer needs, and competitor activities is crucial. They ensure that the product strategy is relevant and competitive, adapting as necessary to changes in the market.
  • Cross-Team Coordination:
With multiple teams working on a product or a set of products, the Principal Product Owner is crucial in ensuring alignment and coordination across these teams. This includes managing dependencies and resolving conflicts.
  • Scaling Agile and Lean Practices:
They will be key in scaling agile practices across multiple teams or the entire organization, ensuring that product development remains customer-focused and efficient.
  • Problem Solving and Risk Management:
The Principal Product Owner is instrumental in identifying risks that could impact the product's success and devising strategies to mitigate these risks. They also solve complex problems that may arise during the product development lifecycle.

In summary, the Principal Product Owner acts as a strategic leader and facilitator among multiple Product Owners, ensuring that each product area is aligned with the overall product strategy and business objectives. They play a key role in decision-making, stakeholder management, and maintaining the overall health and direction of the product or product suite.
