Job description

As the Manager, R&D (NPD), you will lead a team of engineers in the development of a first-generation product within our Orthopaedic Instruments Business Unit. Operating in an evolving and often ambiguous environment, you will play a key role in setting technical direction, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and building a high-performing team equipped to deliver innovative solutions.

You will need to live within commuting distance of our Portage, Michigan office. You are required to be in the office three days per week.

What you will do

  • Lead the development of a first-generation product from early concept through commercialization, ensuring alignment with technical, quality, and regulatory requirements

  • Coach, develop, and lead a high-performing team of engineers, providing direction, support, and opportunities for growth

  • Set clear performance goals, provide regular feedback, and foster an environment of continuous learning and development

  • Navigate uncertainty by making informed decisions and adjusting plans as priorities and insights evolve

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including customers and key opinion leaders, to ensure the product meets clinical and business needs

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with quality, regulatory affairs, marketing, manufacturing, and other partners to support product success

  • Apply structured problem-solving and process improvement tools to optimize development processes

  • Lead design control activities and ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory standards and documentation requirements

  • Manage budgets, contribute to planning efforts, and ensure accountability for resources across your team

What you need

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related discipline

  • Minimum 8 years of product experience in engineering, quality, regulatory, or manufacturing engineering within a highly regulated industry (automotive, pharma, aerospace), including 2 years of direct people management experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering

  • New Product Development experience

  • Experience working in a cross-functional team in the research, planning, development and launch of projects in a regulated industry

  • Project Management experience
