Are you a creative engineer with an insatiable curiosity and a passion for creating solutions that make a difference? In this role as a Senior Staff Electrical Design Engineer, you will be part of a team working on the next generation motors and sensor technologies needed to advance our Shaver and High Speed Drill portfolio. These devices are used by Health Care Professionals in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Neurosurgical procedures – procedures that improve and save lives. You will be responsible for creating the motor architecture that will be used in these devices, and working with colleagues on how to integrate this into the overall device architecture and the ecosystem of complementary devices.

What you will do:

Technical Responsibilities:

This role will be focused on designing small, high speed, high precision motor hardware and its circuitry. You will be responsible for the creation of embedded systems requirements/architecture for new products leading to engineering High Speed Motors and Motor controller PCB assemblies.

  • You will have the opportunity to work with multiple technologies including FPGA’s, motor controllers, mixed analog/digital circuits, embedded microcontrollers/microprocessors, sensors, and camera/EM based navigation.

  • You will perform a wide variety of technical work in planning and design of electro-mechanical, embedded hardware electronic circuits and PCB design which will lead to new or improved products/product lines under marketing, cost, time and regulatory constraints for medical devices that supports our Neurosurgical needs.

  • Through the design process, you will complete analysis for electromagnetic compliance (EMC), reliability, safety, cost and design for manufacturing / assembly / test.

  • You will assist in evaluating vendor capability to support development and test fixture development.

  • You will work with our technical leadership and project management team on breaking down work, scheduling, risks, and project updates.

  • You will lead or mentor design and development of electrical components, sub-systems, and/or systems for medical devices.

  • You will conduct, design, and select advanced prototyping and testing. You will lead and guide in correction of complex product design issues.

Business Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to competitive and market strategy by demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the market, customer dynamics and competitive offerings.

  • Apply strong understanding of clinical procedures to enhance product development.

  • Contribute to and execute customer facing activities like voice of customer and customer centric design in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.

What you will need (strongly desired):

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in EE or related discipline & 4+ years of work experience

  • Advanced understanding of the design of complex components and sub-systems.

  • Ability to apply advanced circuit and electrical system test methods.

  • Advanced understanding of statistical methods. 

  • Advanced knowledge of sub-system, system, and environmental interactions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understands the advanced theory and methods of Motor Design and Control and can lead others in its application while demonstrating:

  • Experience and expertise using electronic hardware lab tools for development of design (e.g. Oscilloscope, Electronic Loads, Function Generator, Spectrum Analyzer, Environmental Chambers).

  • Experience and expertise with PCB Schematic & Layout process and tools (e.g. PSpice, LTspice, OrCAD, Mentor Graphics, Altium, etc.).

  • Experience and expertise with Motor design simulation tools (e.g. Ansys Maxwell, Ansys Motor-CAD, Motorsolve, etc.)

  • Experience and expertise in autoclavable electro-mechanical designs.
