We are looking for a career-focused R&D manager with strong leadership and technical expertise to help surgeons see and do more! 

You are the technical leader of an R&D team that contributes to the development of new products from beginning to end. Your team develops technology and product road maps and builds core engineering competencies within the department. You are responsible for primary hiring, on-time performance appraisals, coaching/counseling, employee development and necessary communications regarding performance issues. 

The ideal candidate has had a hands-on engineering background that allows them to dive in technically where needed but can think strategically about how to build the team and the products for the future! 



What You Will Do:

  • Plan, organize, staff, direct and control the engineering function within appropriate guidelines, policies and regulations. 
  • Provide technical expertise to engineers in one or more areas of engineering and design. 
  • Be responsible for the development of one or more areas of core engineering competency. 
  • Build relationships with strategic vendors that allow the ability to jointly develop and evaluate technology. Find and develop relationships with new strategic vendors. 
  • Lead special engineering or related discipline projects/assignments. 
  • Collaborate with a product definition team and technical architects to build technical and product roadmaps. 
  • Establish and guide goals and accomplishments of the team/department. 
  • Be responsible for primary hiring, on-time performance appraisals, coaching/counseling, employee development and necessary communications to regarding performance issues. 
  • Drive and develop increased team engagement over time. 
  • Conduct regular talent reviews to including promotion & succession planning, talent exportation, performance management, and development of new leaders for the business. 
  • Maintain the timeliness of the engineering schedule to insure effective administration of time standard practices. 
  • Plans and coordinates with other engineering areas to ensure the timely and efficient product development. 
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and compliance activities within prescribed area. 
  • Develop annual budget, status reports and other related communications and operates within budget and organizational guidelines and philosophy by implementing cost reduction programs through value analysis, through strategic planning for the acquisition and maintenance of engineering assets, and by strategic workforce planning. 
  • Be accountable for all record-keeping as appropriate and in accordance with Stryker specifications. 
  • Sign as the final release authority on engineering drawings and other documentation. 
  • Work as a key member of an interdisciplinary business team to drive business performance. 
  • Assist the VP/Director of R&D in overall management of the department as assigned. 
  • Handle complex or difficult situations as appropriate.


What You Need: 

  • Undergraduate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering. Advanced engineering degree desired. 
  • At least five (5) years experience working as an engineer on successful product development efforts. At least two (2) years of management responsibility. Specific experience in medical device development is preferred. 
  • Basic skills - Time management, project management, reports and budget, stress management, conflict management, re-engineering, customer service, advanced computer skills, ERP, statistics, manufacturing process, financial systems 
  • Functional skills – technical skills in one or more areas of electrical and computer engineering, e.g. PCBA design and manufacturing, high-speed digital and analog design, FPGA and image sensor design, digital/analog control systems, and embedded design. 
  • Ability to make decisions regarding technical issues during concept and product development, troubleshooting, sustaining, and appropriate follow-up. 
  • Ability to make decisions impacting team members regarding training, coaching/counseling and appropriate follow-up. 
  • Ability to make decisions regarding compliance issues, product reliability and analysis of testing methodologies.
