Main Objective / Purpose of the role:

Expectations and Objectives

  • Ensure Stryker staff and surgeons across the APAC region are responsibly and ethically trained on the “Safe and Effective Use of Stryker Equipment” to Make Healthcare Better.
  • Responsible for independent annual Development, Planning and Execution of:

1) Stryker MAKO Product Specialist Training and Certification

2) Orthopaedic Surgeon MAKO Certification courses (PKA, TKA and THA), and

3) Orthopaedic Surgeon and Stryker General Education (Hip/Knee, Spine, Trauma, etc.)

  • Collaborate with the Asia Pacific Leadership Team and their respective country Leadership Teams to strategically identify, qualify, on-board and develop an A-Class Surgeon Key-Opinion-Leader Faculty for:
    1) Cadaveric Manual Surgeon Training,
    2) Cadaveric MAKO Surgeon Certification and to
    3) Live Surgical Observations to host visiting surgeons within their local institution. 

    This would include partnering with Sales & Marketing, Professional Affairs, Legal and Compliance and Finance to ensure all MedEd interfaces with these KOL’s progress smoothly and do not cause any friction with the local commercial entities while remaining independent from sales.  It would also require a balanced mix of specialization and language coverage.

  • Develop, maintain and strengthen the Stryker and/or Dealer MPS talent base and relationships with a goal to create a strong and cohesive Stryker APAC MedEd and MAKO community for sustainable “Robotic” competitive advantage.
  • Take personal “ownership” to ensure the syllabus is geographically relevant and continues to evolve in a fast changing clinical environment while ensuring consistency of our programs with the relevant “parent” US Product Divisions via RA/QA alignment.
  • Maximize individual knowledge transfer/retention across a multitude of diverse language & cultures for both internal and external students and create analytics/measures for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure MedEd programs are not miss aligned with the commercial needs of Stryker by collaborating with local sales, marketing & MPS team members to understand these.

Key Objectives:

Mako Product Specialist (MPS) Training and Certification

Serve as a Regional Stryker MAKO Trainer to prepare and educate the local MAKO Product Specialists (MPS) to be 100% independent such that they can take command of local Operating Room and Hospital Institutions for optimal Mako-surgeon interaction during intra-surgical MPS support.  This would include;

  • Training on how to prepare for, setup and behave in an OR setting including overcoming objections and tactfully handling difficult OR staff
  • Mastery of the US Mako derived training content with extremely high knowledge transference to the students for high levels of field independence
  • Understanding of the various OR settings regionally and how training must be adjusted to optimize for each OR eventuality
  • Maximizing the learning opportunity by utilizing English as a Second Language and Adult Learning Training techniques

Orthopaedic Surgeon Mako Certification

Facilitate Mako Surgeon Certification to pre-agreed global standards.  This would include:

  • Design and budget of a full course agenda
  • Selection and appropriate contracting of CadLab facilities
  • Selection and engagement of KOL Surgeon faculty
  • Organising all equipment necessary with an appropriate course workflow (using “moderator notes”) for flawless execution
  • Evaluation post-course with feedback to the surgeon and MedEd team for constant improvement and update of “moderator notes” and including relevant notes on the budget and contractors used.

Orthopaedic Surgeon and Stryker General Education

Support the development and delivery of training and education programs for both Stryker employees and regional customers on Orthopaedic products. Collaborate with regional sales and marketing leaders to train on the relevant Focus Brands.

  • Support Clinical Education and Training for Stryker Asia Pacific.
  • Either deliver content individually or engage faculty for course agenda, development of course curriculum in coordination with US Education and Training teams
  • Support the development of regional surgeon KOL’s and clinical experts
  • Communication and coordination with US clinical training team, to deliver current and accurate training programs.
  • Support regional sales and marketing efforts through the delivery of road-show product demonstrations and participation in local and regional marketing and clinical conferences. Provide potential customers with opportunity to experience product in use and explain its clinical value.

Specific Roles On Manager Request

Each individual may be tasked with additional responsibilities as follows:

  • Supervising local MedEd Warehouse and Operations Services
  • Working with the US product divisions on Curriculum and Syllabus development across Mako, Hip, Knee, Trauma & Extremities, Foot & Ankle, Sports and Spine.
  • Developing regional iLearn modules
  • Working with the US Navigation division to ensure competency by delivering/facilitating Stryker and Surgeon Navigation training across APAC
  • Working with Endo/Comms on iSuite integration to be the MedEd team expert for intercompany divisional interfaces

Backup for Mako In-Field Support (As necessary based on CLPS availability)

  • Support Field MPS activities as required from time-to-time in emergencies where local staffing is not available for surgical cases and supervise surgeries for local MPS certification
  • Train physicians and hospital personnel, including Theatre staff, radiology and central sterile processing on the use of the Mako System, accessories, disposables and implants per the Mako released surgical techniques and guides
  • Provide surgeons and Theatre staff with training and Clinical/Technical support in the operation of the MAKO robotic arm, its SW applications, associated equipment and instruments to insure delivery of best clinical outcomes.
  • Use proprietary software to prepare pre-operative CT scans for use in conjunction with the company's Robotic Arm, assists surgeon in preoperative robotic procedure surgical planning.
  • Support local MPS in solving product problems at local accounts in an expeditious manner.
  • Serve as a backup to support case coverage in the region.
  • Support the development and execution of the sales plan as well as grow the utilization of the Mako system by customer training and education with an objective to increase procedure volume with current and potential surgeons.
  • Actively reinforce the clinical benefits of the products, and build strong, positive relationships with key surgeons and Theatre staff at Stryker Asia accounts.
  • Mentor and certify new local MPS’s by delivering on job training and guidance following company’s policies.
  • Collaborate with regional training teams in communications and negotiations with government and professional bodies to ensure the accreditation of courses as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or MBA in a related technical, teaching or clinical role.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant healthcare experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and relationship management experience across a multicultural environment – ideally pan Asia Pacific
  • Prior commercial experience in Product Development, Product Management, Sales or Marketing.
  • Excellent control of English (Speak, Read, Write) with additional familiarity with additional Asian languages an advantage
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate with executive level C-Suite and Surgeon customers as well as the senior leaders across Stryker.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to develop and deliver highly technically oriented training materials including good Presentation and Facilitator Skills
  • Awareness of Adult and Accelerated Learning techniques and a demonstrated aptitude to develop expertise here
  • Comfortable in taking command in a clinical and surgical setting to guide surgeons and clinical staff to optimize clinical results in a multicultural environment
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented and a proven history of ability to make independent decisions in a fast-paced, dynamic business environment
  • Able to develop and deliver training and education programs
  • Clear aptitude to pass the relevant internal MAKO and PRODUCT course trainings and maintain a high level of personal credentialing as required by Stryker and any 3rd party assessors
  • Demonstrated “Passion” for technically oriented and education and an aptitude to “dumb it down” for broader student appreciation
  • An excellent aptitude for 3-dimential spatial awareness
  • Flexibility for up to 40% travel (e.g. several weeks annually for Train-The-Trainer courses) as well as availability as scheduled on weekends for Surgeon Certification Courses
