Job Description

The Sr. Prototype Machinist will work on and lead the efforts in the prototype shop to build, inspect, test, and assemble product components per specifications using prototype shop equipment.

The Sr. Prototype Machinist will be responsible for helping to develop and lead the efforts in the following areas:
  • Fabrication, inspection and assembly of components per verbal and written specifications using accepted machine shop practices
  • Fabrication of test fixtures, gages, prototype instruments & implants for concept development and final product testing purposes
  • Participate in team-oriented discussions on new product design, manufacturing techniques, and product evaluations
  • Assist in the development of future needs, equipment, budgets
  • Projections of prototyping needs, manpower, outsourcing, scheduling, etc.

Job Requirements

A minimum of a High School Diploma is required; relevant vocational or trade school training and/or apprenticeship program is highly preferred. 10 years of experience in a machining or tool & die making role and 5 years of experience in a prototype environment is required.
Ideal candidates should also possess the following skills/experiences:
  • Expert knowledge of the following:
    • CAD/CAM software (e.g.: ProE, Esprit) to develop designs
    • Bridgeport, Lathe, Surface Grinder, CNC, Wire EDM and similar equipment
    • Manual finishing equipment, such as belt sanders, grinders, bader, buffer and similar equipment
    • Measurement tools, such as vernier, micrometer, gages, comparator, vision system and similar equipment
    • SLA and/or Polyject 3-D Printing
    • Laser and TIG welding
  • Must be able to lead a team and develop goals for a fast paced product development group
  • Perform accurate machining in a variety of materials (stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, polymers) to close tolerances
  • Expert knowledge of heat treatment methods
  • Welding experience for stainless steel (17-4ph, 420, custom 455)
  • Wire EDM programming (Sodick)
  • Advanced metrology knowledge
  • CNC Miller and Bridgeport Programming – (HAAS, Prototrak) using CAM Software (Esprit)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the use of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
