What you will do

Provide leadership and direction to ensure Stryker Medical has a best in class Design Control system and methods that will be employed across all Medical R&D sites.  The Division Process Owner (DPO) will be known as the division subject matter expert and leader to define, develop, and implement effective and efficient processes and supporting tools globally across the division.  This role will report into divisional R&D leadership and collaborate with the corresponding Corporate Process Owner (CPO) to continuously improve the medical design controls system. The DPO will lead, influence, and collaborate with site process owners and serve as their single point of contact for process related questions. The DPO is accountable for ensuring cross functional alignment and support to drive customer experiences and improvements holistically through the design control system.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Ongoing assessment of Design Control procedures in use at all Medical R&D sites
  • Accountable for execution of a glide-path for harmonization, while maintaining current QS requirements such as 21 CFR part 820, ISO 13485, and any other applicable standards, and unique site requirements.  
  • Establish key metrics across sites to accurately represent the state of design controls at each site.  Accountable to drive improvements in design controls to show improved efficiency, compliance, and competency.  Responsible for program budget estimation, monitoring, and attainment.
  • Lead, influence and mentor all Medical division R&D site process owners to the design control strategy.  Drive collaboration with program team members, resolve conflicts, and assess tradeoffs for any changes to program scope, cost, or schedule.
  • Represent Medical Division R&D and the Design Control process to adjacent DPO/CPO work streams (Ex: Risk Management) to ensure seamless integration of systems and processes
  • Communicate status of design control projects at Medical to Corporate Quality Office, including the CPO, as well as, other R&D and Executive leadership throughout Stryker
  • Influence Corporate Process Owner (CPO) on Design Control and Medical RAQA integration plans, whilst delivering a compliant, efficient, and balanced design controls framework
  • As a DPO, partner with IMO (Integration management office) on key priorities and initiatives
  • Champion the creation and implementation of Next Generation Design Control methods, including the development and delivery of training for all Medical R&D sites that are based upon a deep understanding of current business practices, product risk classifications, site capabilities, and are aligned with the standards and best practices employed by industry
  • Must drive engagement with divisional program management personnel to develop New Product Development (NPD) business tools and practices, such as stage gate management and agile frameworks, to enhance our speed to market initiatives, reduce cost of development, and foster greater levels of innovation
  • Build lasting networks of internal/external experts in the design control arena, as well as, influence standards writing bodies towards effective and efficient processes

What you need

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline required
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in engineering discipline preferred
  • 12+ years of relevant R&D, Quality System, and FDA Design Controls experience required
  • Extensive industry knowledge required
  • Demonstrated versatility and a willingness to manage and lead a team through change and ambiguity
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, collaborative team work, conflict management, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with mid-level management
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting to and influencing executives
  • Ability to generate and explain opportunity analysis and value assessments accurately
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, train, and develop direct and indirect team members
  • Ability to develop a strategic vision for a department and lead the resulting process and structure changes for the organization
