Job Description

The Senior Manager, Legal Counsel serves as a commercially focused, strategic legal resource for one or more business units of the Instruments Division. Works closely with business and functional units on a broad range of matters including legal and compliance issues consistent with laws, regulations, and Stryker policies. Serves as a member of the business unit(s) leadership team and is responsible for advising leadership of the business unit(s). Responsibilities include:
  • Contributing to solutions to problems that could have a significant impact on the company
  • Prioritizing issues and coordinating with project groups to develop solutions to complex problems
  • Providing legal advice related to multiple issues and making decisions related to legal matters that could have a large financial impact on the company including in litigation, intellectual property, compliance with laws, investigations, contracting, government relations, sales agreements, tender agreements, company secretarial issues, tax matters, and supply or vendor relationships among others
  • Responsible for a large number of issues, prioritizing and delivering timely results
  • Decisions will affect all areas of the organization including regulatory, finance, human resources, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, R&D, sales, and marketing, among others, divisions, and geographies
  • Independently drafting, editing, and negotiating basic contracts
  • Drafting, editing and negotiating complex commercial matters through to resolution with direction
  • Providing timely advice and counsel to clients
  • Advising the business on laws, regulations, and Stryker policies
  • Providing in-house training and education
  • Following and implementing internal processes
  • Collaborating and communicating with colleagues, management, and outside counsel
  • Assisting on other matters as needed

Job Requirements

  • Law degree and admission to practice law
  • Minimum 3 years applicable professional experience; prior professional experience considered
  • Requires a thorough understanding of all areas of the division including other functions (regulatory, finance, human resources, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, R&D, sales, and marketing, among others) as well as other divisions and geographies
  • Requires regular interaction with outside organizations including industry associations, law firms, vendors, customers, government agencies, court systems, regulatory authorities, law enforcement authorities, consultants, health care professionals, and contractors, among others
  • Demonstrates good judgment and professional demeanor
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with colleagues in a global organization
  • Embraces and supports change in a dynamic environment
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Possesses good analytical and drafting skills
  • Experience providing legal advice in a highly regulated environment preferred

  • Possesses good communication skills and ability to convey legal principles clearly and concisely
  • Has a basic understanding of business financials and reporting
  • Has the ability to allocate resources effectively and, where relevant, has a general understanding of the budgeting process, expense and headcount management
  • Possesses good organizational skills and ability to manage numerous projects and conflicting demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Possesses good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate at all levels of organization
