Position Summary:

  • Serves as a member of the Corporate Legal and Compliance Department and provides leadership, oversight and responsibility for the development and implementation of an effective compliance program for the businesses of the NIS Group. 
  • The position is responsible for the oversight, development and implementation of an effective compliance program in accordance with Corporate Policy #8: Compliance Program, including by proactively addressing, and supervising others to address, a broad range of compliance matters for Stryker’s NIS businesses including improving, managing, developing and enhancing the Compliance program and overseeing the facilitation of Compliance Committees for the NIS businesses. 
  • These responsibilities may encompass a broad range of areas related to compliance to include but not be limited to: the application of laws and guidance to many unique business activities and development/implementation of corporate and divisional policies and/or procedures. 
  • Provides support to the broader Corporate Compliance Group as well as the above businesses.
  • Makes decisions of significant impact and exercises independent judgment. 
  • This position is viewed as a resource partnering with the NIS Divisions, which strongly influences global department strategy and the associated businesses.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing leadership and accountability in the effective implementation of the Compliance Program in accordance with Corporate Policy #8: Compliance Program for NIS businesses.
  • Responsible for providing leadership, oversight and accountability in the development and implementation of broad-scale compliance programs plans, tasks and initiatives to ensure pushdown through the organization.
  • Ensures that all essential elements of a complete Compliance Program are operating well to address and prevent risks, including training & education, auditing & monitoring, and forensics & investigations with appropriate root cause analysis.
  • Identifies and implements improvements to the Compliance Program while working with others across the company to ensure effectiveness, practicality and applicability.  
  • Develops strong relationships throughout areas of responsibility, including all functional areas, departments and divisions to foster an advisory and collaborative approach to proactive compliance. Builds relationships with colleagues cross-divisionally, working towards a single team and Department identity.
  • Promotes collective collaboration, strategic thinking and operational plan execution among other senior compliance members to maximize value to the business, including by driving the ongoing evolution and operation of the global compliance function and related programs.
  • Supports divisional and group efforts in the initial due diligence and subsequent integration planning required by business development activities. 
  • Maintains high level of knowledge of current and emerging laws and regulations, and periodically reviews and updates standards relating to compliance.  These include but are not limited to Stryker Corporate Policies and Procedures, industry trends and guidance on country, state or local laws.
  • Provides input and oversees training and education activities in coordination with the Corporate Compliance Training team.
  • Works with Department Centers of Expertise to avoid duplication of efforts and to encourage uniform use of global tools.
  • Participates in specific Departmental, Group or Global initiatives, committees and tasks forces, as applicable. Collaborates with others to build scalable and sustainable global, business and customer-oriented solutions that leverage technology and when implemented ensure one consistent process, remove inefficiencies, and add value.
  • Oversees the completion of all annual compliance program effectiveness (e.g., SAFe) self-assessments and related audits, and compliance monitoring and audits for the NIS divisions and business units using prescribed assessment tools, to identify issues, trends and share best practices.
  • Responsible for the ongoing monitoring of Group issues and allegations to ensure timely and appropriate investigations resulting in consistent application of corrective or disciplinary action.
  • Makes recommendations to Compliance and Legal Leadership and influences group/departmental strategy with regard to the development or revisions of existing policies, procedures or systems to attain high levels of performance and build competitive advantage.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and on-going performance management of direct employees (Divisional Compliance Officers and other compliance personnel) and actively supports the development of talent, consistent with the talent strategy of the Department and the company.
  • Works with group, divisional, site, and functional leadership to ensure the achievement of strategic business initiatives.
  • Represents NIS Group on various global committees and organizations, for example:
  • Investigations Oversight Committee
  • Corporate Compliance Committee
  • Organizational project teams
  • And may represent Stryker with external organizations e.g., AdvaMed DDCG

Education & Special Trainings:

Undergraduate Degree,    

Graduate Degree and professional accreditation preferred.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Recommended 17-20 years experience in a regulated environment. 
  • Demonstrates well-developed professional demeanor and executive presence. 
  • Perceived as highly competent with high level of business acumen and good judgment.
  • Able to initiate, embrace and support change in a dynamic and complex environment. 
  • Exceptional communication skills (writing/presenting).
  • Widely-recognized within company for ability to inspire, educate and empower others.

  • Able to effectively provide guidance and direction to less experienced staff and demonstrate leadership skills.
