Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION 

Evaluates and brings new products to market for our Sports Medicine business. Develops test plans, methods, and fixtures to challenge product design candidates and ensure that they meet functional requirements. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Observes and evaluates customer needs and clinical procedures to determine how new product concepts and prototypes should be tested on the bench. 

  • Evaluates design candidates through bench testing (mechanical, electromechanical, simulated use, etc.). Collaborates with Design Engineering team to evaluate test data and to determine whether design candidates meet functional requirements. 

  • Owns test strategy and test plan for new product development and sustaining projects including pilot and verification testing. 

  • Designs and coordinates standard engineering tests and experiments. Trains and coordinates R&D technicians to execute product testing. Summarizes, analyzes, and draws conclusions from test results using statistical methods. Prepares test documentation to communicate results to technical community, including formal test protocols, test reports, and related design history documentation.  

  • Develops and establishes test methods to meet functional specification requirements. Ensures that test methods are representative of product clinical use, and that they adequately challenge the device. 

  • Develops mechanical and/or electromechanical fixtures using latest technology, with the goal of increasing accuracy, repeatability and efficiency of the associated test method. 

  • Improves upon the design and clinical relevance of existing test methods/fixtures in support of sustaining existing product lines. 

  • Applies engineering principles/methods to independently troubleshoot and root-cause testing failures associated with design candidates. 

  • Maintains a strong working relationship with the design team throughout the design and development process. 

  • Coordinates testing with outside firms, as needed. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

 

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • ​​Must be able to resolve complex testing and/or equipment issues using independent judgment 

  • ​Must be able to generate, follow and explain detailed instructions and test procedures​ 

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED 

  • 0-4+ years of related design experience 

  • Works independently to plan and schedule own activities to meet project timelines 

  • Works cooperatively with Design, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success 

  • Collaborates with peers to leverage and share engineering best practices 

  • Applies knowledge of customer problems to the product development process. Understands the basic principles of minimally-invasive surgery. 

  • Knowledge of basic statistical principles 

  • Knowledge of Minitab or equivalent statistical software (preferred) 

  • Knowledge of Creo or equivalent CAD software (preferred) 

EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED 

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, or related curriculum
