Job Description

General Summary:

Concept lab team lead (mechanical prototype shop). Work from CAD files, drawings, sketches and verbal instructions to construct engineering prototypes and models, production tooling and various test equipment and apparatus.  Work with a variety of materials such as metal, plastic, additive manufacturing, etc.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage shop workload, priorities and scheduling with technicians.
  • Order materials, monitor budget and expenses, oversee equipment and material inventory.
  • Provide direction and training to concept lab personnel.
  • Works with technicians and engineers in evaluating and improving designs or processes.
  • Responsible for daily operations of concept lab and keeping manager informed as needed.
  • Works from drawings and receives verbal and written instructions. 
  • Constructs precision prototype parts and models from raw stock materials. 
  • Assembles mock-ups to simulate new product appearance. 
  • Design and constructs tools, molds, jigs and fixtures for assembly and manufacturing needs to meet schedules and objectives. 
  • Set-up and operate various types of machines, tools, 3D printer equipment and computers in the Concept Lab to produce prototypes, models, parts, fixtures.
  • Work with CAD/CAM system to machine parts from engineering generated CAD designs and/or shop generated CAD designs.
  • Experience with measurement tools and techniques.
  • Maintain shop equipment in top operating condition - cleaned, oiled, sharp and accurate.  Maintain equipment and shop capability long range plan.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • 12 years machine shop experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CNC programming and machining
  • General machining (lathe, drill press, sheet metal forming, additive manufacturing)
  • 3D CAD (PTC Creo preferred)
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience with CAD/CAM systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work from and interpret drawings, sketches and verbal instructions and to use and safely operate CAD/CAM systems and various machine and hand tools including CNC mills and 3D printers.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering materials and their physical properties.
  • Demonstrated experience constructing engineering prototypes and models and applying shop math methods.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, independent judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience and capabilities of leading a team, day-to-day

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
  • May travel from time to time to collaborate with others
