The following is a list of projects/objectives for the prospective intern

1) 3 Phase DC Vacuum Pump Speed Control:


  • This project would likely be paired up with the ME Intern for next year; Mike Z. will be providing more details for the ME assignments/roles


  • Small footprint due to DC 3-phase motor horsepower density vs AC induction 3-phase
  • Possibly eliminates the Vacuum Regulator motor and vacuum disk control
  • Lower energy usage when system demands low pressure/flow rates (energy star compliance rating)
  • Lower noise, heat, etc

Goals of assignment:

  • Help design the controller card with micro to drive the 3 phase DC motor, read pressure from the canister, and implement a PID control routine that will regulate vacuum base on the speed of the vacuum pump
  • Write SW for Vacuum controller micro for routines of PID loop, reading pressure, safety controls, and performing regulated vacuum

2) Implement a Wireless Communication between Rover & Docker N3 and N4 Systems:


  • Since IR LED communication technology is limited we need a way to provide communication between the Rover and the Docker
  • N4 will likely need communication with the OR tower and the Docker systems. This new platform could be used for both applications

Goals of assignment:

  • Design the circuit board to convert TTL communication signals within today’s N3 Rover/Docker and convert them to Wireless
  • Wireless carrier board could be utilized, RF experience not required
  • Write SW for controller device that bridges messages between TTL com pipe to wireless payload

3) Develop an Estimated Blood Loss Sensor:


  • Having some gauge of blood content within the canister will assist the anesthesiologist with administrating the medication
  • Provides a mechanism to provide a check of internal bleeding (blood loss) within patient verses actual blood removed by the Neptune

Goals of assignment:

  • Research sensor technologies and architect a platform that could provide an estimate of blood contents within a canister
  • Write SW for a 8 bit microcontroller device that does processing on sensor interface (interrogation and processing return responses)

What You Need

•Currently working on completion of Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent; we will only consider students who plan be enrolled in a degree-seeking program after the summer
•Cumulative 3.0 GPA or above; must be the case at the date of hire and also will be verified during background check in the spring
•Must be permanent resident of the U.S. or U.S. citizen
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; able to manage priorities and workflow
•Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
•Ability to exercise independent judgment
•Proficient on basic computer programs: Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
•Proven leadership and business acumen skills
•Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
•Strong interpersonal skills
•Desire to do hands-on testing/troubleshooting of circuits
•Ability to document design decisions and create testing strategies that verify functionality
•Demonstrated ability to operate small hand tools (e.g. pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, wrenches, etc.), power tools and test/inspection equipment
•Demonstrated mechanical/electrical problem solving skills
•Design engineering, or related experience.
•Experience with circuit design layout- preferred
•Electronics trouble shooting experience- preferred
•Familiarity with PCBA, CAD tools (OrCAD, Cadence, PCB Designer)- preferred
•Programming/Simulation (C, C++, Matlab, Pspice, Simulink, LabVIEW)- preferred
