Job Description

The Formulations Manager, New Product Development (NPD) will lead a team in the development of new products for Sage Products (Stryker Medical Cary). The candidate will provide technical and tactical direction to engineers and scientists within NPD. Responsible for product development of new topical and oral drug formulations from concept to commercialization within company, industry, and regulatory parameters. 

  • Manage long and short-range development project plans
    • Provide input on project selection and scope
    • Collaborate with Market Intelligence to make project continue or kill decisions.
  • Management of NPD projects
    • Demonstrate proficiency with project management principles to effectively meet project objectives and milestones to achieve desired outcomes
    • Regularly review project plans
    • Meet with engineers for regular status updates and to provide decisions and direction
    • Assure project timelines and budgets are realistic and being met
    • Track project deliverables and report status to key stakeholders
  • Support formulation of new oral, topical OTC and NDA/ANDA drug product formulations, evaluate their characteristics, and provide guidelines for manufacturing and packaging of product within FDA drug regulations
  • Evaluate new technologies, conduct process optimization studies, perform stability/compatibility tests, work with analytical teams to design methods
  • Professional development of engineering/formulation personnel, ensuring talented employees are attracted, selected, retained, and developed
  • Communicate regularly with senior NPD leaders to provide updates on appropriate aspects of projects, process, and people
  • Represent Sage NPD department when interfacing with business partners, including Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain, senior leadership, and other Stryker business units
  • Protect and advance the proven Sage new product development methods
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science field required
  • Master’s in Engineering or Science preferred
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a technical role, with experience in OTC or prescription formulation chemistry and related scale up manufacturing preferred
  • Able to translate customer input into designs to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of pre-formulation, manufacturing technology and scale-up, cGMPs, FDA Regulations, EU-MDR, ICH Guidelines, and Quality by Design principles. 
  • Experience with people management and development preferred.
  • Strong verbal and writing communication skills. Able to present project information and effectively communicate complex information to senior leadership.
  • Ability to influence, educate, and mentor on areas of experience.  Strong ability to facilitate discussions and negotiate mutually beneficial solutions
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated project management experience with cross-functional team leadership and participation preferred
  • Strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel and Outlook

Work From Home: Occasional

Travel Percentage: 10%
