Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Government Affairs team with the development and implementation of government affairs strategies that support the Company’s mission, values, and business priorities.
  • Maintain and expand Stryker’s relationships with key Congressional offices and federal agencies.
  • Advocate and advance Stryker’s priorities by representing the Company to senior policymakers and their staff, trade association working groups, and other organizations involved in health policy.
  • Build relationships with external stakeholders to advance common policy priorities.
  • Assess policy proposals for risks and opportunities, and in collaboration with internal subject matter experts, develop a strategy for response.  Particular focus on Medicare and FDA issues.
  • Represent Stryker within membership associations and assist with supporting Stryker’s board members to the associations.
  • Represent the Government Affairs team internally at business reviews, presentations, and other internal meetings to collaborate and receive input from senior leadership.
  • Actively contribute to government affairs updates to internal audiences
  • Work closely with the Corporate Communications team to develop and refine internal and external messaging related to government affairs activities.  
  • Work with Stryker colleagues globally, as appropriate, to ensure coordination and consistency in advocacy positions.
  • Nationwide travel to Stryker facilities, conventions, and industry associations meetings will be expected.  (approximately 15% of time).

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and handle multiple tasks with a high degree of motivation and initiative.
  • A strong network of relevant contacts in Congress, Executive Agencies, and with health policy stakeholders related to the medical device sector. 
  • A deep understanding of the policymaking process and how to advance policies aligned with the Company’s mission and values.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and advocacy skills.
  • An ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborative working style and ability to connect people across the Company.
  • Networking and communication skills to effectively build relationships with key stakeholders, senior members of the health policy community, and government to advance Stryker’s priorities with these audiences.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Masters or Law degree a plus with particular focus on health policy, healthcare related discipline, political science, or public policy.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years policy experience, with increasing responsibility and preference for experience on Capitol Hill or within a federal agency in a healthcare role.
  • Knowledge of Medicare and FDA regulations and policies a plus.
  • Life sciences, particularly medical device, experience preferred.
