As the Director of Embedded Software R&D, you will apply your extensive knowledge of software architecture, coding and development tools to lead and manage software development teams and projects. The successful candidate will assist in the development of short, medium, and long-term plans to achieve strategic objectives, regularly interacting across functional areas with senior management and executives to ensure program objectives are met. You will possess the ability to influence thinking or gain acceptance of others in important situations, demonstrate leadership and people management skills, and use strong communication skills, analytical skills, and your thorough understanding of embedded software development to deliver new products to customers around the world. This software leader interfaces with numerous functions of the business, including marketing, R&D, clinical, regulatory, operations and most importantly our customers to support our corporate mission:  Together with our Customers, We are Driven to Make Healthcare Better.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The successful candidate will be a strong relationship builder and cooperative partner with their colleagues in research, development, operations and other departments that are both internal and external to Stryker.   Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Drive the design and development of the embedded software in Stryker’s surgical robotics platforms, ensuring our products meet regulatory requirements and Stryker’s internal quality requirements as we extend our lead in the surgical robotics field.
  • Hire, mentor, and coach a team of up to 35 embedded software developers, Scrum masters, testers, and integration specialists including software managers from other Stryker locations such as Germany and Michigan.
  • Foster and promote Agile methods in our development culture to achieve high productivity, engagement, and quality in our design output.
  • Serve as a key contributor to our product and technology roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with program management, systems engineers, and quality engineers on the planning and execution of product verification and validation.
  • Champion innovation and collaboration across Stryker divisions.

REQUIREMENTS:

We are looking for a Director of Embedded Software R&D who combines a solid technical background with the ability to lead and manage people and development processes in a multi-disciplinary Agile software R&D environment.  You should be highly organized, with the ability to convey highly technical information to internal staff as well as stakeholders.  It is also important that you combine excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

Specific requirements for this role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Robotics or related field with 12+ years of experience OR Master’s/Doctoral degree with 12+ years experience, AND a minimum of 5 years experience leading and managing software development engineers.
  • Experience in software development in a highly regulated environment, such as medical devices.
  • Must be well versed in Agile development methods, preferably Scrum-based Agile.
  • Prior development experience with embedded C and C++ programming.
  • Detail oriented with strong English written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in robotic motion control, path planning, force control with boundary constraints.
  • Experience working with Linux, QNX, and/or VxWorks operating systems.
