A design engineer is an integral part of our our design team and NPD process. This role will work with a cross functional team to design, evaluate and bring new products to market for our Sports Medicine business. 

  • Evaluates customer needs to specify precise new product functional requirements.
  • Invents/creates concepts and designs for new products/processes and submits invention disclosures.
  • Utilizes CAD systems to model component and assembly designs and produce detailed engineering drawings.
  • Leverages a range of prototyping and manufacturing methods to produce design candidates. Evaluates design candidates through benchtop and user testing (mechanical, electromechanical, simulated use, physician labs).
  • Collaborates with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability. Performs tolerance stack-up analysis studies and leads technical design reviews to finalize product and component designs.
  • Serves as a Design Lead on cross-functional project team to bring design candidate to market. Supports design control deliverables, including documentation of design inputs and outputs, design reviews, risk analysis and management, etc.
  • Designs and coordinates standard engineering tests and experiments. Trains and coordinates R&D technicians and works with test engineers to support product testing. Summarizes, analyzes, and draws statistical conclusions from test results. Prepares test documentation to communicate results to technical community.
  • Works with the Operations team to support design transfer activities, including identification of critical quality attributes, process validations, PPAP (production part approval process), etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 0-4+ years of related design experience
  • Knowledge of SOLIDWORKS or equivalent CAD software
  • Knowledge of Minitab or equivalent statistical software
  • Knowledge of basic statistical principles
  • Works independently to plan and schedule own activities to meet project timelines
  • Works cooperatively with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success
  • Collaborates with peers to leverage and share engineering best practices
  • Performs root cause analysis on prototypes and iterates on product design
  • Applies knowledge of customer problems to the design process. Understands the basic principles of minimally-invasive surgery
  • Basic understanding of shoulder, knee, and hip anatomy
  • Understands manufacturing methods and processes (DFM)
  • Basic understanding of FDA regulations
  • B.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering, or related curriculum
