Job Description

Stryker’s Sports Medicine business delivers a wide range of innovative sports medicine solutions – from implants and biologic products for soft tissue repair and healing, to pre-operative surgical planning software and surgical tools for accurate soft tissue and boney resection - our focus is on minimally invasive and open approaches to the shoulder, knee, hip, and small joints. R&D People Management

  • Management of R&D personnel.  Size of team will be 4-6 individuals with opportunity to grow the team.
  • Responsibilities for direct reports include but are not limited to:
    • Develop Individual Development Plans.
    • Give timely performance feedback, including difficult feedback when necessary.
    • Assign technical or project assignments to team in line with Sports Medicine business needs and career development needs.
    • Write and deliver annual performance appraisal.
    • Recruiting and selecting next wave of talent for the team.

Product Development, Project Leadership and Management

  • Portfolio planning and project selection.  Partner with Marketing to evaluate market opportunities and select next projects.  Advance or retire potential projects through an understanding of user needs and financial metrics.
  • Create project charter identifying objectives, scope, constraints and financial and/or strategic goals of the project. 
  • Develop project schedule, resource needs and assemble project team to meet goals stated in project charter.
  • Create a project budget inclusive of resource needs, capital expenses and non-recurring expenses. 
  • Manage changes to project scope, project schedule and costs using appropriate verification techniques to keep the project plan accurate and current. 
  • Ensure team members have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and are held accountable for achieving project goals. 
  • Drive high team performance by building team cohesiveness, leading, influencing, and motivating in order to facilitate cooperation, ensure project efficiency, and foster employee engagement. Lead team to navigate roadblocks.
  • Measure project performance using appropriate tools and techniques in order to monitor the progress of the project, identify and quantify any variances, perform any required corrective actions, and communicate to all stakeholders.

360 degree Communication and Stakeholder Management

  • Regularly communicate status to and actively manage all project stakeholders, senior leadership, project team, key suppliers or surgeon-partners and Project Management Office (PMO).

Relationship Building

  • Build trusting relationships with peers, front-line managers and executive management.

Proactive Risk Management

  • Proactively identify project risks and lead team through risk reduction and mitigation activities. 

Defining Product Specifications

  • Truly understand lower-level engineering specifications.  Work with team to remove ambiguity and ensure coverage of all user needs and project goals.

Intellectual Property Management

  • Partner with technical leads and patent attorneys to generate new intellectual property (IP) and navigate existing IP.

Health Care Professional (HCP) Interaction

  • Partner with HCPs (e.g. surgeon, hospital staff) to refine user needs, refine product specifications and gage acceptance as required to support concept development, launch activities or issue resolution.

Supplier Management

  • Establish relationships with key suppliers and technology partners; communicate project objectives and ensure that cost, schedule and quality objectives are met. 

Performance Evaluation of Cross-Functional Team Members

  • Provide feedback on the performance of team members (e.g. Manufacturing, Test and Quality) to functional managers.

Building a Culture of Project Management Excellence

  • Participate in the Endoscopy PM community; leverage enterprise tools and exchange project management best practices of each PM in the building to optimize project performance.  
  • Manage project closing activities, ensure lessons learned are archived, shared with the rest of the organization and executed on the next project.

Skills / Experience Required

Emotional Intelligence

  • Demonstrated pattern of learning, self-awareness and self-improvement.
  • Independent judgment; this is a highly autonomous position with an emphasis on decision making.  Need to work on projects with general direction and minimal guidance but have the good judgment to reach out for help or peer input when appropriate.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication.  Ability to truly influence and collaborate within and outside the team.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical terms to a non-technical audience.
  •  Ability to effectively and completely communicate project and technical details for project documentation. 

Required Technical Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years’ relevant experience in product development.
  • 2+ years of direct people management experience preferred
  • 2+ years of demonstrated project management experience desired

Education / Training Required       

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related engineering curriculum
  • Continuing education or experience in Project Management field preferred
  • Project Management certification is a plus (e.g. PMP, PRINCE2)
