This role directs and coordinates development of mechanical systems for integration into medical devices. This Role demands in-depth knowledge of technical mechanical systems and processes as applied to medical device development in a regulated industry. This individual contributor needs to frequently Interface with cross functional divisional counterparts (R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, etc.) across a variety of Stryker sites working towards product development milestones.

What you will do
 

  • Independently, or as a member of a team, develops, directs and executes plans for a major segment of complex projects. Independently compiles and analyses operational, test and research data to establish technical specifications for design or modifying products, processes and materials.
  • Independently designs and implements mechanical concepts to fit that are part of an electro-mechanical system.
  • Develops sub-system level design strategies and leads design, development, testing & refinement of components across multiple manufacturing methods. (i.e. sheet metal, injection molding, machining,).
  • The Staff R&D Mechanical Engineer works cross-functionally to lead design development activities for CMF new product projects.
  • Completes Product Development documentation within Quality System per Design Controls and Regulatory Standards.
  • Assists across the entire medical device development process, including concept development, component selection, testing, design specification, and Verification and Validation activities.
  • Works with core team to determine project schedules and time commitments of self and other functional project team members and be able to clearly communicate status of assignments to project management and leadership.
  • Performs detailed CAD design work and creation of drawings.
  • Conducts static and fatigue stress analysis on developed designs using FEA.
  • Coordinates mechanical DFM activities with AO & production vendors.

Technical Skill Set

  • Expert in Mechanical Design Engineering. Should have a strong understanding and experience in working with Mechanical Systems such as mechanisms, bearings, and drive trains.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD modeling skills (Creo & SolidWorks).
  • Expertise in DFMEA, DFM/DFA, Tolerance Stack-up, Risk Analysis, FEA, etc.
  • Ability to set up test methods and perform verification and validation activities (test design, fixture design, test execution).
  • Awareness about ISO13485 and International standards, and norms.
  • Strong technical documentation skills – authoring and reviewing engineering rationales, reports, and design history file documentation.
  • Experience in selecting materials and finishes to meet the design requirements, considering use environments in hospitals.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including but not limited to machining, injection molding, and metal forming.

What you need

  • B.S. degree in engineering or applicable technical field (mechanical, materials or biomedical preferred) (M.S./PhD in Engineering or related field preferred)
  • 5+ years’ of medical device design and development experience, advanced degree may be considered towards years of experience

The applicant should have a solid foundation in technical mechanical engineering, experience in designing mechanical systems in a highly regulated environment and exhibit high attention to detail and data-based methodical decision making.
