Position Summary: The Regional Legal Counsel, UK & Ireland, shall support the commercial activities of the Stryker UK Business, and the R&D activities of the Irish Business. The Regional Legal Counsel is required to provide competent support in the active drafting, negotiation and execution of contractual arrangements. As part of the global Legal and Compliance Department the Regional Legal Counsel shall also engage, support and counsel colleagues and shall work closely with business and functional units on a broad range of matters, including legal and compliance issues, and consistent with laws, regulations, and Stryker policies.  This position may require up to 25% travel.

Main Duties: 

  • Supporting the drafting, negotiating and finalizing a wide range of contracts executed by the Stryker UK business, including contracts for cross-divisional Sales and Services, Robotic Sales, strategic Tenders and Procurement.
  • Providing timely regulatory advice to the UK Regulatory Team on all aspects of placing medical devices on the market, including but not limited to EUMDR, liaising with notified bodies, liaising with the HMRA, collateral material review and drafting and reviewing regulatory notices as appropriate.
  • Building good working relationships with the relevant business and support function leaders.
  • Supporting the European Instruments Business, liaising with Instruments leadership as appropriate.
  • Providing effective legal services for the Stryker UK sales division, including advisory and contractual support for marketing, sales, and indirect channels.
  • Providing effective legal services for the Irish R&D businesses and working with IP and GQO counsels in a harmonized manner. 
  • Providing training and education for stakeholders to ensure the proper functioning and transparency of the contractual process.
  • Providing accurate information and research to a supervisor regarding laws and regulations.
  • Providing directed support related to the development of in-house training and education.
  • Collaborating and communicating with colleagues, management, and outside counsel and working with outside counsel with direction.
  • Providing timely advice and counsel to clients.
  • Developing strong relationships throughout area of responsibility to foster an advisory or collaborative approach to proactive compliance. 
  • Maintaining current working knowledge of current and emerging laws and regulations.  These include, but are not limited to Stryker Corporate Policies and Procedures, industry trends and guidance on country, state/provincial or local laws.
  • Responding to alleged violation of rules, regulations, policies, procedures and standards of conduct by recommending the initiation of appropriate procedures in partnership with the business.
  • Making recommendations to Legal & Compliance leadership with regard to the development or revision of existing policies, procedures or systems to attain high levels of performance and build competitive advantage.
  • Responsible for contributing to solutions to complex problems which could have a significant impact on the company
  • Responsible for prioritizing multiple issues and coordinating with large project groups to develop solutions to complex problems
  • Responsible for providing legal advice related to significant issues and making decisions related to legal matters which could have a large financial impact on the company including areas involving litigation, intellectual property, compliance with laws, investigations, contracting, government relations, sales agreements, tender agreements, company secretarial issues, tax matters, and supply or vendor relationships among others                          
  • Managing and strategics with outside counsel    
  • Assisting on other matters as needed

Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

  • Applicable law degree and admission to practice law
  • Requires a thorough understanding of and division-level leadership interaction with all areas of the organization including other functions (regulatory, finance, human resources, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, R&D, sales, and marketing, among others), other divisions, and geographies
  • Requires frequent interaction with outside organizations including industry associations, law firms, vendors, customers, government agencies, court systems, regulatory authorities, law enforcement authorities, consultants, health care professionals, and contractors, among others
  • Applicable professional experience; prior professional experience considered              
  • Experience with being a country lead in-house legal counsel for a medical device business
  • Experience with providing regulatory advice for medical devices
