The job´s mission

The Senior Regional Counsel GSAP, BeNL provides professional legal services to the Stryker entities in the region to ensure that Stryker’s legal rights are protected and that the business is compliant with local, international and corporate requirements. In addition, the role will act as the lead lawyer for the Trauma & Extremities Division in Europe and for identified pan-European projects.

Your key responsibilities

  • As the key legal business partner for the GSAP & BeNL region you will:
    • Provide timely advice and counsel to all clients, including Stryker management and the GSAP & BeNL Leadership Team.
    • Active member of the GSAP & BeNL Leadership Team
    • Act as the legal point of contact for all of Stryker’s R&D teams in the GSAP region
  • Lead lawyer for the Trauma & Extremities Division in Europe:
    • In this capacity you will be the strategic business partner to the VPGM and leaders of the Trauma & Extremities (T&E) Division in Europe.
    • Key collaborator with the US Senior Legal Counsel for the T&E division within the Transatlantic Operating Model.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) Projects responsibilities:
    • Additional Europe-wide SME responsibility and/or projects to be defined on a needs and expertise basis (e.g.: Social Media, EU MDR, Training & Education).
  • Effectively manage, lead and engage 1-2 Legal professionals across the regions supported.
  • Collaborate with all legal and compliance colleagues across Europe.
  • Member of the European Legal & Compliance (L&C)  leadership team:
    • This team (i) sets the direction for the European L&C team, aligns with business strategy, takes strategic decisions & influences (ii) helps the team navigate the matrix and build the team’s brand, and (iii) establishes and maintains an environment for success of team members.
  • Provide counsel and advice in acquisition & integration activities and support the implementation of integration strategies.
  • Drafting and review of complex commercial agreements, and participate in negotiations to ensure the legal rights of Stryker are protected.
  • Ensuring implementation of appropriate agreements for surgeon consultancies, research, sponsorship and fellowships and ensure that appropriate compliance principles are included and that compliance standard operating procedures are followed.
  • Draft, and supervise and oversee the drafting and negotiation of, various agreements, including tender agreements, hospital supply/pricing agreements, and consignment and loan kit agreements and proactively handling various commercial matters through to resolution.
  • Provide advice on employment–related issues where there is an issue to assess and/or when external legal advice may be required.
  • Provide counsel and guidance in navigating local laws and regulations that directly and indirectly impact the various businesses.
  • Provide counsel and advice for the termination of distributors, agents, and other third parties, including negotiation and drafting of termination and settlement agreements.
  • Monitor legal developments across the region, provide updates to the various stakeholders and take such action to address such developments internally.
  • Instruct external counsel in litigation and other legal matters, and monitor as appropriate.
  • Review and establish standard forms for agreements in the region.
  • Assist and support Stryker’s compliance programs and work closely with the Compliance Officers in this area, including serving as a member of the Compliance Committee.
  • Actively participate in the projects and work undertaken by the Legal and Compliance Department team including regular reports to the Chief Legal Counsel.
  • Advise the business on laws, regulations, and Stryker policies with strong knowledge of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the MedTech Europe Code of Ethics.
  • Initiate, develop and provide in-house training and education.
  • Follow, implement, develop and improve internal processes.

What are we looking for?

  • Advanced law degree, admission to practice law preferred
  • Minimum 8 years of applicable professional experience within a law firm or a legal department
  • Demonstrates excellent judgment, professional demeanor, business acumen and executive presence, general understanding of business financials and reporting

  • Has the ability to allocate resources effectively and, where relevant, general understanding of the budgeting process, expense and headcount management
  • Possesses excellent organizational skills and is able to manage numerous projects and conflicting demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate at all levels of corporate organization, including the senior executive level
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in German & English required; other European languages are beneficial
