Job Description

Individual Responsibilities:

  • Proactively collaborates with internal teams/departments to promote a culture of inclusiveness and cooperation

Functional Responsibilities:


  • Build strong internal network with colleagues in such functions as Marketing, Clinical, Key Account Management, Business Analytics, Strategy, Business Development, Regulatory and Legal
  • Develop overarching Government Affairs strategy that supports our business strategy
  • Manage external stakeholders and regulatory bodies to promote Stryker objectives – Government relations (Federal and Provincial)
  • •Develop industry leading role for Stryker and raise Company profile with policymakers and other key stakeholders
  • •As part of the leadership team, develop effective relationships with other Directors and KAMs within Canada and Stryker Corporate to maximize business opportunities
  • •Accountable for function’s budget planning and achievement
  • •Contribute to and drive strategic business outcomes across Canada. Develop and deliver business plans for all areas under direct responsibility
  • External facing role, however has excellent Stryker understanding and authority to act on behalf of the business in the healthcare environment
  • •Advise on healthcare environment innovations
  • •Management and development of individual team members
  • •Collaborate with internal teams across the organization to ensure GA messaging and strategy are aligned.

Market Access

  • Provide strategic and analytic thought leadership to ensure the development and implementation of strong value propositions for Stryker products
  • Drive innovative economic modelling activities that maximize the total value of brands for payers, purchasers, surgeons and/or patients
  • Provide strategic and tactical input into clinical development programs and commercial plans throughout the product’s lifecycle to optimize market access and brand value proposition
  • Foster, maintain and continually refine network of external consultants who are subject matter and functional experts
  • Optimize and influence prosthesis list process as it evolves
  • Identify and maintain sources of data to be leveraged in support of product value evidence
  • Drive value evidence publication strategies, targeted toward relevant, impactful journals, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders that optimally support product access
  • Ensure timely availability of key health economic deliverables to support market access, as well as commercial and scientific strategies (e.g., economic models, publications, value dossiers)
  • Maintain knowledge of federal and provincial developments by HTA and value assessment organizations and influencers, internally communicate potential implications for Stryker’s business, and participate in favorably influencing that environment to optimize business climate
  • Develop value demonstration and communication tools for sales staff and other customer-facing colleagues
  • Drive KOL and value assessment organization interactions to ensure timely strategic input, understand evidence needs, and lead scientific communication of value messages


  • Assess policy proposals for risks and opportunities and develop a strategy for response, in coalition with trade association and other partners where appropriate
  • Develop and advance policy strategies that support our mission of working together with our customers to make healthcare better, support business growth, and position the company as a thought leader


  • Position Stryker as a resource and thought leader with key government policymakers by telling our story, building relationships, identifying opportunities for collaboration and consensus.
  • Build coalitions to support our growth and mission
  • Lead trade association engagement and collaborate with industry and association colleagues to advance key initiatives
  • Establish and foster relationships with and engage stakeholders to create a network of influencers for Stryker to partner with on key objectives

Conduct & Compliance

  • Abide by and support the policies set forth in the Stryker Code of Conduct
  • Understand that compliance with the Code of Conduct, as it may be amended by Stryker Corporation from time to time, is a condition of continued employment with Stryker
  • Conduct work in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations and in accordance with Stryker’s high ethical standards
  • Report any violations of these policies and procedures to Stryker management or in the manner outlined in Stryker’s Ethics Hotline Policy

 Knowledge & Skill Requirements                                                                                                                                     

  • Negotiation and communication skills to effectively build relationships with key clients, stakeholders and senior members of the community and government
  • Strong existing network of relationships with senior-level health and policy making officials.  Prior experience in relevant government body desired. 
  • Technical proficiency including product knowledge, knowledge of the medical and hospital industries to build effective relationships and comply with corporate policy and relevant federal and state legislation
  • Understanding of medical device lifecycle management and Canadian market access/reimbursement environment
  • Experience interacting with Canadian payers and KOLs preferred
  • Proven ability to undertake comparative CEA and budget impact studies required
  • Awareness of challenges associated with conducting clinical and health economic research of medical devices vis-à-vis pharmaceutical products
  • Understanding of the legislative and policy making processes and a proven track record of implementing government affairs strategies to positively impact the policy debate
  • Business process improvement capability and ability to drive and implement systematic improvement and quality results across the business
  • Business acumen
  • Strategic capability to effectively set and drive long term business objectives.
  • Leadership, change leadership and people development skills to build and drive a quality culture across the business
  • Local travel within Canada

 Education & Qualifications                                                                                                                                                   

  • Graduate qualifications in a related field are desirable.
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset
  • Previous experience as a business manager in a technology related industry with a demonstrated track record of success in business development, business improvement and quality processes.
  • Experience in managing regulatory functions is also an advantage.
  • Experience as a senior manager with extensive experience operating effectively as part of a leadership team with accountability for overall business results
  • Internal applicants with an equivalent combination of education, experience and performance over time at Stryker will be considered
