The successful candidate will be based at the Medical Division in Portage MI and will provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplined team in establishing the needs of our customers while designing and bringing innovative solutions to market.

What you will do:

The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer designs, develops, modifies and evaluates electronic and/or mechanical components subsystems or systems in the Emergency Care product portfolio. In this role you will determine and ensure the use of specific design approaches and parameters and will conduct feasibility studies on new designs. This position is involved with projects from research to product launch.

Some responsibilities include:

  • Knows and applies advanced concepts, practices and procedures of mechanical engineering design
  • Possess and applies comprehensive knowledge of particular field of specialization to the completion of complex assignments that may cross disciplines.
  • Develops system level design strategies and may lead design, development, testing & refinement of components and sub-systems according to internal and external standards
  • Usually works with minimum supervision.  May be assisted by other engineers
  • Under general supervision, plans, conducts and supervises technical assignments
  • May take a technical leadership role on one or more projects of significance
  • Demonstrates developing technical leadership skills divisionally
  • Mentorship of junior engineers
  • Keeps supervisor informed regularly on status of work
  • Assignments may be broad in nature requiring originality and ingenuity
  • Latitude for action or decision
  • Reports observations/problems clearly and concisely, recognizing and highlighting specific deviations and presents possible solutions
  • Recommends changes in procedures and processes

What you need:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline
  • ​Minimum 10 years design engineering, or related experience. Has launched product critical sub-systems and demonstrated impact to an organization.
  • Working knowledge of ProE or CAD design software

The Principal Engineer supports the R&D team on technical challenges in the development of cost effective, best in class new products for Emergency Care. He/She should have understanding and experience in application of engineering principles, techniques and concepts, providing technical leadership and training to product development teams to enable exceptional product performance and satisfaction of user needs.

A technical expert, Principal Engineer will provide coaching and mentoring for the R&D team members. Through creativity and ingenuity, He/She will promote and stimulate an environment that supports the generation of value-adding intellectual property in alignment with the clinical and technology road maps of the business. While maintaining a customer focus, He/She will support collaboration across the cross functional teams, promoting connectivity for an integrated R&D strategy.

He/She will provide technical support and counsel to R&D project teams on active projects. He/She will also identify emerging technologies and instigate, manage, support and provide direction on early stage research that is consistent with the objectives of the clinical and technology road maps of the business.
