Job Description


We are seeking mechanical engineering students to join our hardware development team for the summer of 2020.  Candidates will have a solid engineering core curriculum, and a demonstrated interest in mechanical design and experimentation.

If you have a solid academic history and an interest in complex electromechanical devices, we’d like to hear from you. You will work closely with our hardware team to develop state of the art medical robotics and instruments. This hands-on position will require command of mechanical engineering principles, critical thinking, creativity and close collaboration.

Required qualifications

  • Coursework at an accredited institution towards a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering. Strong preference given to candidates having complete junior year.
  • Basic training in mechanical CAD, preferably SolidWorks.

Responsibilities (in collaboration with and under supervision of the engineering team)

  • Collaborate with design engineers to develop and analyze designs.
  • Apply engineering principles to analyze components and assemblies and troubleshoot systems.
  • Conceive and create experiments and functional tests.  Design experiments, draft test procedures, verify equipment and fixtures, perform experiments and tests, document results.
  • Design and build simple fixtures and equipment.  Depending on skill and supervision, fabricate components using machine shop equipment.
  • Participate in assembly and test of product prototypes.
  • Engage in other design, analysis and hands-on task as requested.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong theoretical and analytical skills in mechanics, statics, strength of materials, thermodynamics.  Strong command of algebra, trigonometry and linear algebra.
  • Good written and verbal communication.
  • Experience with hand tools and basic measurement equipment.
  • Strong skill in data recording and reporting.
  • Ability to work semi-independently as a contributor in small teams.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, and Google Office Suite.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with hand and small power tools
  • Familiarity with statistics and data analysis
