Job Description

Maintains primary responsibility for the direct management and administration of litigation matters across the European region, exercising sound independent judgment, strategic thinking and strong interpersonal skills and as the point person for external counsel and internal constituents in the coordination of litigation within the Region. Also works closely with business and functional units on a broad range of matters including legal and compliance issues consistent with laws, regulations, and Stryker policies.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for litigation within Europe, interacting with US counterparts to ensure the proper case administration and reporting at local, regional and global levels and notification to the relevant regulatory and finance teams;
  • Responsible for providing legal advice related to multiple issues and making decisions related to legal matters which could have a large financial impact on the company. Decisions will affect the all areas of the organization including regulatory, finance, human resources, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, R&D, sales, and marketing, among others, divisions, and geographies.
  • Process incoming cases and pre-litigation claims and notifying relevant internal and external contacts, including establishing accruals;
  • Manage all aspects of the litigation process from case inception through case closure implementing Stryker’s global litigation strategy, conducting investigation, adapting case strategy at a regional level as needed, providing updates, evaluating exposures and, subject to approval, advising on settlements and providing internal guidance and partnering with various departments of the business;
  • Assist with processing, investigating and asserting claims under various authorities and in multiple jurisdictions. Work closely with business units and witnesses across the organization to properly defend and/or prosecute matters;
  • Act as liaison with and manage outside counsel, including controlling outside legal spend;
  • Research and analyze procedural and legal issues;
  • Review and respond to letters requesting information from solicitors and/or interested parties;
  • Develop, implement, manage and refine litigation process, procedures and initiatives.  Harmonize and share best practices;
  • Provide timely advice and counsel to clients; advising the business on laws, regulations, and Stryker policies. Keep abreast on litigation regulations and developments and advise internal constituents;
  • Coordinate and collaborate with country legal leads, paralegals, legal assistants and regulatory and quality teams in various regions;
  • Provide in -house training and education.
  • Requires a thorough understanding of all areas of the division including other functions (regulatory, finance, human resources, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, R&D, sales, and marketing, among others), other divisions, and geographies
  • Requires regular interaction with outside organizations including industry associations, law firms, vendors, customers, government agencies, court systems, regulatory authorities, law enforcement authorities, consultants, health care professionals, and contractors, among others
  • minimum 3 years applicable professional experience; prior professional experience considered
