Job Description

Responsible for manufacturing engineering, integrated manufacturing, new product introduction, manufacturing systems integration and supplier engineering. Lead the team in creating a culture of Continuous Improvement (LEAN, TOC, etc) and supporting the efforts of training and education.  Has administrative and engineering approval authority for process related engineering documentation and process changes.  Needs to own/drive the development of technology to support a CI culture.  This requires driving solutions to reduce/eliminate waste that are both innovative and consistent with the LEAN philosophy. Develop a culture of excellence in quality, manufacturing, innovation, and continuous improvement to achieve and sustain process excellence, long term competitiveness and drive future business growth. Provide leadership and technical direction to the business unit engineering managers.  Establish individual and team goals and ensure delivery of exceptional performance to internal and external customers.

  • Build and develop the organizations manufacturing and process engineering teams through the selection, training and development of engineering talent, and the development of deep technical skills, innovation ability, engineering know-how and core competencies.
  • Needs to align technical development of people with technical development of processes and core competencies.
  • Goes with the statements above on driving culture to support LEAN/CI, change control, validation, etc.  Develops an engineering structure that grows experts in mfg .engineering, reduces turn over, creates an environment to develop new engrs, and exports talent. Drives a culture that sustains technical talent at the highest level comparable to RnD.
  • Develops/owns an engineering strategic plan (5 yr plan, etc) plus associated budget determination and responsibilities.
  • Develops/owns/drives a problem solving methodology, consistent with the above principles and sustainable….ie six sigma, etc.  develops the engr structure around that (including metrics, bonus incentives, etc)
  • Partner with RnD to develop new products.  Involvement in the earliest design stages…..eventual integration of AME….
  • Will own and implement the necessary systems for validation and process development/control at a site level that meets and adheres to FDA QSR, ISO 13485 and Corporate and Divisional procedures and instructions.
  • Develop training and development plans, and career paths for each of your team. Ensure effective and balanced allocation of work and resources so that each team member provides excellence in production and manufacturing support and in the provision of technical training to production teams.
  • Will work closely between the operations director/business unit manager and R&D/product development on product deployment, manufacturing, cost reduction and product/component sourcing strategies.
  • Work in conjunction with manufacturing unit managers to implement a manufacturing strategy which encompasses six sigma and lean manufacturing principles, lean product development, optimization of process/product flow
  • Workplace ergonomics and facility layout design. 
  • Ensure the effective implementation and validation of manufacturing processes and equipment to support business growth, cost and capacity needs. Work with R&D to ensure that all new products are designed and optimized for manufacture, that process validations are fully complete and that all related process documentation is in place prior to manufacturing startup and product launch. 
  • Ensure the application of statistical methods to estimate future production requirements and determine process capability.  Ensure that all new product builds achieve performance, quality, cost, yield, capacity and launch attainment goals. Ensure the efficient and timely transfer of process knowledge from engineering to operations.
  • Identify, investigate and implement a pipeline of new and advanced manufacturing process and automation technologies and methods, and develop competencies which will enable new and disruptive product designs, enable radical cost reduction, maintain competitive advantage in manufacturing and create new market and growth opportunities. 
  • Oversee the specification, purchase and qualification of capital equipment ensuring balance between optimizing technological capabilities and return on investment. Will monitor and control progress of projects to ensure sound application of engineering principles are used and design intent is being followed/achieved. Will have a prime role with respect to equipment and process optimization ensuring flawless delivery of all project commitments.
  • Partner with the R&D, Supply chain and strategic sourcing team to develop close strategic collaboration’s with OEM’s, component suppliers, manufacturing equipment and technology partners to ensure optimum vendor selection, machine/component pricing and supply chain design.
  • Drive the achievement of excellence in project management using concerto and theory of constraints tools. Communicates regular weekly updates on project status to senior management, project teams, stakeholders and sponsors.
  • Ensure that monthly departmental and project budgets are adhered to. Monitor and review of monthly departmental budgets and compilation of overall monthly capital and expense spend projections.
  • Partner with Quality and Product Engineering to drive product reliability up and Out of Box Failures to 0.  Drive release responsibilities for all engineering functions to ensure CAPA’s are resourced appropriately and drive product de-proliferation efforts to optimize our manufacturing.
  • Will have periodic contact with customers (e.g. face to face, telephonic, written correspondence, E-mail)
  • Responsible for inter-departmental compliance with company policies and corrective actions
