Job Description

Basic Function

CMM Programmer is responsible for programming and operating coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to inspect close tolerance components to print or CAD, and verifying fixtures to print or CAD.  CMM programmer is responsible to perform part layouts, provide PPAP documentation, and conduct Gage R&R and capability studies.  CMM Programmer will train inspectors, machinists, and associates on the operation and use of the CMM.


  • CMM Programmer is responsible for programming and operating coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to inspect components.
  • Utilizes CMM to inspect parts in accordance with engineering blueprints and other delegated dimensions.
  • Performs Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) studies for programs and fixture setups.
  • CMM Programmer will train inspectors, machinists, and associates on the operation and use of the CMM.
  • Utilizes CMM to verify fixtures are to print.
  • Will have strong understanding of blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T.
  • Ensures accuracy of CMM programs to dimensioned tolerances. 
  • Performs part layouts and provides PPAP documentation.
  • Conducts process capability studies.
  • Participates in team problem solving.
  • Develops, maintains and communicates CMM reports.
  • Serves as resident expert on all CMM data collection.  
  • Works with engineering team to develop fixtures and holding methods appropriate for proper data collection.
  • Analyzes and summarizes data.
  • Will work with engineers to develop technically appropriate inspection techniques for components.
  • May perform other general inspection for acceptance of components.
  • May train other inspectors on proper measurement techniques.
  • May use and program similar computer controlled devices for measurement (i.e. Optical Measurement Devices).

Physical Requirements

  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to work with and assemble small objects and component parts.
  • Must be able to communicate with others.
  • Must have good visual acuity and demonstrate fine motor skills.
  • Ability to operate common office equipment (e.g. calculator, PC, telephone, etc.).

Mental Requirements

  • Must be able to generate detailed data reports.
  • Must be able to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Must have exceptional understanding of blueprint reading and GD&T.
  • Must have above average understanding of proper inspection techniques.

Qualifications/Work Experience Preferred

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Attention to details.
  • Basic PC skills including Excel.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • 4+ years related manufacturing or technical experience.
  • 2+ years experience programming a CMM.
  • 5+ years related inspection experience.
  • Relevant certification(s) from an internationally recognized body (i.e. American Society of Quality, etc.)

Education/Special Training Required

  • Qualified candidate will have high school diploma or Associates Degree.
  • Must have ability to read and interpret component prints, engineering drawings, and CAD.
  • Thorough knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5.
